Go Contemporary with Hybrid Shutters near Wichita, KS
Window shutters date back to ancient Greece, where they were first crafted from marble. Talk about heavy duty! But these shutters were meant for better ventilation and not designed for light control. Years later, shutters spread throughout Europe and eventually to America, with more practical wooden designs. As glass became more durable affordable, these exterior window treatments moved to the indoors as well.

But don’t think that today’s shutters are old-fashioned; at Jackie and Bill's Drapery & Interiors, we offer contemporary plantation shutters that are modern, practical, and beautiful to behold.
The Need for Hybrid Shutters
In the past, shutters have been associated with classic architecture and installed on home exteriors alongside windows. They’re typically made from wood, although some might offer materials like vinyl or composite.
For the interior, Hunter Douglas manufactures custom plantation shutters that control light and privacy for home and business owners. But what happens if you don’t want ones made from genuine hardwood? We have the solution!
About NewStyle® Composite Shutters
Natural wood responds to excessive heat and moisture by expanding, contracting, and absorbing water. Over time, this can cause warping, swelling, and discoloration, affecting its appearance and structural integrity. Hybrid shutters have a composite construction that maintains their appearance and structural integrity similar to vinyl.
Hunter Douglas NewStyle® Composite Shutters are made from a wood composite material fused with a strong and flexible plastic, but they look like the real thing. How does Hunter Douglas do this? Through superior craftsmanship, Truemill® dovetail construction. This joinery technique is the same method used for our 100% hardwood Heritance® Wood Shutters and is similar to the way fine furniture is constructed. We coat our shutters with a low-luster Finetech® finish. These hybrid, contemporary plantation shutters have the look of finely painted wood; they’re offered with 2 ½", 3 ½", or 4 ½" louver sizes.
Contemporary Plantation Shutters Add to Your Home's Value and Appeal
These versatile window treatments complement any aesthetic direction; hybrid shutters' clean, crisp appearance is surprisingly versatile. These interior shutters also add significant value to homes. Unlike horizontal blinds attached to headrails, shutters are built onto frames and installed as permanent fixtures. Their other benefits include improved light control, enhanced privacy, and insulation properties that can contribute to energy efficiency.
The versatile design suits many room types, from formal living spaces to casual family rooms, bedrooms, and kitchen areas. Their moisture-resistant properties make them an ideal wood shutter alternative for bathrooms and other high-humidity environments.
Other Types of Plantation Shutters
Hunter Douglas offers two other kinds of interior shutters:
- Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Vinyl Shutters: This durable design features a high-quality vinyl material that resists moisture and UV rays, with a DuraLux™ Finish for strength. It also has resin block and aluminum bracing construction and a Polysatin™ compound for water resistance.
- Heritance® Wood Shutters are made from ethically sourced, genuine hardwood that Hunter Douglas finishes in a choice of 20+ colors. And like NewStyle® Composite Shutters, they also feature Truemill® dovetail construction and an Integra™ Finish.
