Top Treatments

What Are Top Treatments

At Jackie & Bill’s Drapery & Interiors, we offer custom top treatments for your window shades, blinds, shutters, and drapes. These include valances, cornices, and swags. Top treatments give an added level of sophistication to any window treatment. They also hide the headrails and hardware needed to operate a window treatment, which is often the least attractive part of a shade or blind. Top treatments provide clean aesthetic lines or unique architectural elements for your windows that can bring an added level of sophistication.

Swags & Jabots

Swags are pieces of fabric that are draped over a decorative rod. The most popular swag is the simple swag, which drapes in the middle. For longer windows, swags can have several drapes and gathers. Often swags are paired with jabots, which are long pieces of fabric that frame the swags on each side. Sometimes larger windows even feature jabots hanging down the center for an added effect.

Swags are the least structured of our top treatments, which gives them a more casual feel. They can be used as stand-alone treatments for windows that you don’t need fully covered, or they can be paired with blinds, shades, or even drapes.

Valances

Valances are strips of fabric that run the entire length of the window. They are available in several different pleat styles, each of which provides a different structural design. They can be softly folded or sharply pleated. The bottom of the valances can also be shaped in many different ways, either as a clean straight line or with decorative scallops and shapes. Valances can also be gathered to create balloon or faux roman shade shapes.

Valances are usually paired with drapes as their main function is to hide the curtain rod, but they can also work nicely with other window treatments. Roller shades especially work well with valances as they will disappear completely when open.

Cornices

These are the most structured of our top treatment offerings. Cornices are essentially boxes made of wood that are affixed over the hardware at the top of the window. These top treatments can make an architectural statement as painted wood, or they can be covered in fabric to match your window treatments. Cornices can also be trimmed with tassels or cords for added decoration.

Cornices add a formality to any window treatment. These top treatments work best in rooms that have no trim or crown molding because they create unique shapes on their own. They are usually paired with drapery or side panels.
